Well done to Jay Dhaliwal, who is a Chartered Financial Planner in our Birmingham office, and who spent a day providing financial education sessions to students at an Academy in Birmingham.
Jay volunteers as an Education Champion through the Personal Finance Society and regularly hosts financial education sessions for students and schoolchildren to help teach them the basics of personal finance.
This time we she hosted four sessions, lasting an hour each, to a total of 112 students. She explained to the students about investment risks, ISAs, tax, liabilities such as mortgages and loans, and the different types of insurance available. The session included 3 case studies, calculating the cost of insurance, whether it was worth it or not and how an excess would work on the policy. There were also exercises to help them identify their own attitude to risk, how they may want to invest, and the impact of interest rates.
The feedback from Jay’s sessions was overwhelmingly positive! The students were really thankful. Jay said, “Initially I thought the content would be quite basic, but it really highlighted to me how important it is to teach finance in schools.”
